When I was a child I could hardly wait to go to school because then I'd learn how to read and I'd know everything! That was the beginning of my life-long interest in words and writing.

I grew up in Crested Butte and Gunnison, Colorado. After earning my B.A. from Western State College, I moved to California. where I taught high school and college English.

My love of language led me to a career teaching high school and college English. I held leadership positions in education at the state, regional, and local levels. One of my many teaching awards is Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

I founded the Porterville Writer's Workshop, which has flourished for over thirty years, and published my poetry. I received four awards for nonfiction, one of them for the first chapter and synopsis of "Don't Be Give Up," and another for one of its chapters, "Billy Boy."

Her award winning nonfiction books are, “Don’t Be Give Up,” the story of a young girl growing up in a coal mining town during World War II and School Success: 500 Ways Busy Parents Can Help Their Children Succeed in School.

Currently, Shirley tutors students in Porterville, California where she lives with her husband, Joe. They have a son, Joseph. He and his wife, Lisa, are proud parents of two boys.
